Dyeing Easter Eggs – Easy-Peasy!

What a cool Easter egg!

From the archives, for great-looking Easter eggs…fill a baby food jar with dye, then dip half of the egg in, and let it dry. Put a different-colored dye in the jar. Dip the egg again, but only one-third of it. Repeat with both ends of the egg until you have stripes in varying shades.

An Easy Fix to Boost Our Spirits and Protect Our Health

It’s been brutally cold here in Vermont, the kind of weather that keeps our population low. (Some people, who otherwise love Vermont, don’t move here because of our winters.) Wind chills have been dangerously low. It can test our spirits.

How to keep our spirits up, and also protect our health? It’s easy! House plants provide an easy fix. They can be comforting and restorative to look at, also reminding us of warmer times of year. Plus, they magically help to clean the air.

Bonus points. If you douse yours in the shower monthly, they’ll look much “happier.” I figure, too, that photosynthesis has a better chance of working if not competing with (even small amounts of) dust. More bonus points – as you tend to plants in the shower, you also may smell their potting soil. Perhaps it’s another reminder of gardening in warmer weather, which also may comfort you, especially on cold winter days. Though not anytime soon here in Vermont, spring WILL come!

Ahhh…

To Protect Dogs’ Paws From Winter Salt

From the archives, the following recipe should protect your dog’s paws from winter salt.

Paw Wax Recipe
3 ounces beeswax
3 tablespoons calendula oil
3 tablespoons avocado oil
3 tablespoons coconut oil

Melt together in a pan on low heat, mix well, then pour into a small tin or other container. Let cool at room temperature overnight. To use, rub the bottom of your dog’s paws in the Paw Wax and go!

You also might want to give some as a holiday gift to friends, both human and canine.

Travels with…Fido…or Miss Kitty…or…

As the holidays approach, let’s think about traveling with pets.  A friend recently passed along some ideas that could help to keep Fido, Miss Kitty, other pets – and their human companions! – happy as all travel together.

Of course, if you’ll stay at another home, please check with your host(s) first. Are pets welcome? Is anyone allergic to them? This is important to know, to ensure a comfortable and nice visit for everyone, humans and non-humans alike.

Here are some other tips –

  • Do less than you may have planned originally. Traveling with pets can be like traveling with small children. Critters need time to get used to new places. Bonus points – it also helps their humans to slow down and perhaps to enjoy the new environment more.
  • Consider your pet’s personality. What destinations and activities will be fun? If your pet gets nervous in big cities, though loves wide-open spaces, you might opt for the latter option.
  • Before traveling, check your pet’s IDs. Its tags and/or microchip should reflect your current contact information.
  • Bring health records. If you have to visit an unfamiliar vet, having flea and tick, vaccination, and prescription information printed on paper or on a flash drive could lower the stress level, for both you and your pet. Also, some hotels and airlines require proof that vaccinations and flea control are current.
  • Respect rules. Review hotel or other rental property pet policies when making reservations. Don’t try to sneak pets into places where they’re not welcome. That will keep your pet safe and your human smile intact.

Happy holidays, to you and your pets!

Dry Laces!

Here in Vermont, winter has arrived early, with a punch. Many parts of the state got the first real snowstorm this week. Yesterday morning, the wind chill was -6. It’s NovemBRRR!

Here’s a tip for a small thing to do for yourself to keep comfortable and un-frustrated this winter. When taking off winter boots that may be covered with snow or ice, and if their laces are dry, you might tuck them inside the boots. That way, when you go to put on the boots again, you won’t have to deal with wet and/or cold laces.

You’re welcome!

Skin Care and Recycling – A Curious Combination?

A few years ago, someone suggested that I add pieces of lemon to my water. (I’m one of the diligent ones, drinking lots of it every day, all day long.) Why? She said that it helps the complexion. It’s something about keeping pores open. Lemon is also good for us internally; something about controlling bacteria. (I’m not a doctor and I also don’t play one on television. Ha!) For more information about the many benefits of lemon, you might google it.

Here in Vermont, fall is transitioning to winter, with snow on the way tomorrow. As we start to hunker down for the cold months ahead, adding lemon to our daily water intake is an easy way to take good care of ourselves. Lemon also reminds us of warmer weather, which WILL return, though not soon.

After tossing hundreds of pieces of lemon, it occurred to me to recycle them in a useful way. What to do? Drop them into the garbage disposal, then run it. The result? It keeps the disposal unit from getting smelly.

Lemon helps our complexions and helps to maintain the garbage disposal, too!
Lemon to the rescue!

Grills Just Wanna Have Fun!

Do you have a grill, either the old kind that uses charcoal or a gas item? Regardless, if you clean the grate now, before storing it for the winter, you’ll save time. By next spring, any leftover “gunk” will have had that much more time to get attached and will take more effort to clean. Besides, when you want to barbeque for the first time, about the last thing you’ll want to do is struggle with removing months-old residue. After all, grills just wanna have fun!

Do Some Fall Tasks NOW

As spring comes to Vermont, and oh-so-slowly, everyone looks forward to shedding big jackets, gloves, hats and other cold-weather clothes.

Even though it might not be an attractive idea, NOW is a good time to wash all of that stuff – sweaters, scarves, and everything else listed above. Why? When you want to wear them as the weather gets cold again, won’t you prefer to put on clean clothes, rather than “threads” that were shoved away somewhere for the summer, and aren’t clean?

You also might want to polish boots, or treat them with leather cleaner, or whatever else will extend their usefulness.

To Protect Dogs’ Paws from Winter Salt

First posted last winter, this still works; or, I hope so! It’s about to become punishingly cold and we have some, though not a lot of, snow in this part of Vermont.

Paw Wax Recipe

3 tablespoons calendula oil
3 tablespoons avocado oil
3 tablespoons coconut oil

Melt together in a pan on low heat, mix well, then pour into a small tin or other container. Let cool at room temperature overnight. To use, rub the bottom of your dog’s paws in the Paw Wax and go!
