Like many other clients, Valerie found De-clutter Me! online. Specifically, she looked up “professional organizer near me.” She emailed. I responded, suggesting a phone conversation, as I do with all prospective clients. When we spoke, she said that she had “a house full of crap.” Every room was a mess. The kitchen is small. She wants a filing system. It all sounded possible!

Arriving at her lakefront house for our first session together, we toured it. It’s one of those houses that seemingly goes on and on, with many rooms. Yes, they had lots of stuff, from her and other family members.

Where to start? What was bugging her most? We decided on the dining area table, then to follow with the kitchen and living room. It is an open area. It would be a multiple-session project. Okay, let’s get started!

I suggested that we start at one end of the table and work our way across it. It would be highly-detailed. We would touch every object, deciding to keep it or not. If not, it would be set aside to discard, to donate, to recycle, or to give away.

Methodically, we did just that. We set aside a number of items for donation. Many needed to be washed, so we separated them. Others were ready to be boxed, so we did that, too. In the end, the table was completely clear. Yay!

What would be next? We would clear the remaining items from under the table, then work on the living room part of the open area, then the kitchen. In the meantime, Valerie’s homework would be to deliver donations, and to think about a plan for our efforts. What order for the remaining rooms? There is much to do. She’s committed to it and has the energy. Yay again!
