Sharon wanted to work on her husband Rick’s home office. Okay! We would be together on two successive days, for two three-hour sessions. The three of us spent some time clearing office clutter. There was a pile of stuff on the floor in front of a small bookcase under the window, that actually was a clutter collector, and two impressive bookshelf and lower cabinet pieces to fill. They’d been there since late last year, though not really used yet. This would be relatively easy, satisfying and, hopefully, fun, too. Let’s go!

We would work on the bookcase, with the goal of emptying it. Calling it a clutter collector, I also suggested removing it from the room entirely. Its contents might fit nicely into the two big bookshelf and lower cabinet pieces. To reach it, we started with the pile of stuff on the floor in front of it. Empty printer toner boxes were set aside to recycle. We placed business stationery and envelopes, which aren’t used often, on a shelf inside the farther bookcase and cabinet piece, so relatively near the printer and scanner. We put a bin of stamps (to use with ink pads) and art supplies (for making protest signs) on the top of a bookcase. Below it, horizontally, some files and three-ring binders. We put books on the next shelf down. (What an idea!) We put more art supplies in one of the baskets already on the lowest shelf, and straightened up the basket with notecards. We moved the folding chair out of the room. Other supplies of various kinds found homes on the two cabinets’ shelves. Removing the bookcase from in front of the window, we found some art pieces, two of which we hung in the room.

With the pile of floor stuff cleared and the small bookcase gone, it was actually possible to easily walk into and around in the room. Rick was surprised – and happy, too!

As we finished our “first pass” in the room, I urged Rick to be careful about the unused bookshelves turning into clutter collectors. After all, we had just cleared office clutter. Let’s hope it stays that way!

We used the remaining time in our second session to clear the front room with its variety of musical instruments, so they could be enjoyed more easily. Living room clutter cleared, too!
