Arriving at Susan’s, she smiled and said that we would work in her bedroom this time, specifically on some shelves. Okay! We would focus on closet clutter.

As is my customary method as a professional organizer, we would work top-to-bottom. It’s a good way to stay focused and on task. First, above the shelves themselves were some office supplies, which would go on a lower shelf. Next, in two of the top shelf spaces, Susan had stored some gifts to give when the time(s) would be right. We consolidated them in the top center space. We placed office supplies in another space.

Next, we methodically examined each article of clothing in the remaining spaces. To her enormous credit, Susan has lost lots of weight. Many items were set aside to sell or donate. One shelf space was newly devoted to especially nice winter sweaters, which Susan called “Vermont dressy.” (Ha!) Next to that space, in the middle, we placed a selection of tops that would be comfortable to wear as the season transitions to spring.

Our time used up, the morning’s progress was easy to see – clothes to go elsewhere, and eight empty sections of shelves.

With her busy travel schedule, it would be almost two months before we would work together again. What might be next? Will we return to clearing the closet clutter? We’ll find out!
